Neglectfully Yours
By Corvus | August 7, 2007
My frantic pace recently has kept me from commenting on several key issues, including the hate-inspired DOS attacks on GayGamer (link) and the accusations of racism aimed at Resident Evil 5 (link).
Suffice to say that I’m pleased GayGamer is back up and running (link) . I’m sickened by the hatred evident in practically every circle of our culture. Whether it’s estranged relative including me in their distribution lists when they send ’round thinly veiled racists emails about the war in Iraq or tech folk claiming that sexism isn’t an issue in the industry, I’m flummoxed at how far we haven’t come in so many ways.
The RE5 race issue is much too complex to thumbnail a response to (link). I do think playing the game itself will be imperative to fully interpreting any message about race which may or may not exist within its narrative.
I feel badly that there has been such hurt in the world that race is even an issue we still have to deal with. As far as the game being of Japanese origin, and not American (which many have pointed out), racism does exist within Japan and much of Asia as well as the western world. Perhaps not so much racism against those of African origin, but certainly against people from other countries in Asia. Racism is a complex and layered issue no matter what part of the globe it comes from or is directed to. What’s important, I feel, is continuing to have conversations about it.

The only thing worse than the attacks on GayGamer has been the number of idiot comments on various newsblogs and websites reporting this story, many of which have said that the GG guys “deserve it” for advertising that they are gay. “Why are do they separate themselves? Aren’t we all gamers? Homophobes are going to target you!”
To quote a good friend, “This is why I despise gamers.”

The bald faced misanthropy saddens me.
