the Round Table Turns One! [UPDATED]

    By Corvus | August 15, 2006

I just realized that is was a year ago that I launched the Round Table. So, if you’ve a cupcake close to hand, stick a candle in it and wish us a happy birthday! In that time we’ve covered everything from innovation in the FPS genre to in-game marketing. I’ve gone back and re-read some of those early posts and they’re still excellent reads. So, if you’ve missed out on the Round Table thus far, visit our Round Table archive and take a spin through (link).

Josh of Cathode Tan beat me to the punch for first entry this month with a post on why there is no such thing as casual games (link).

I followed behind with a post on why every game could stand to be more like a casual game (link).

We’re going to grandfather in a couple of posts (because we’re nice that way). Chico of nongames quickly questions the nature of casual versus hardcore (link).

And Duncan of Suttree whose post on casual games appeal to to women helped launch this Round Table has provided some link back love, so we’ll give him an extra nod as well (link).

Chris of Only a Game argues that ‘casual’ is a term best applied to the audience with a great post on game literacy (link).

Duncan called the inclusion of his first post in the Round Table an honor. An honor! I’m flattered. Regardless, I felt so warm and fuzzy about it that I’m tossing out a nod for his second post which is an actual Round Table submission in which he lists the things he’d like to see in Casual gaming’s future (link). Personally, I’d love a version of Gauntlet which didn’t suck too!

Patrick of King Lud IC shares some details about the UI for the game he’s working on, a UI designed to be simple, powerful and intuitive. In other words, casual (link).

We’ve got a couple of seriously casual posts for the table:

Johnny Pi of Design Synthesis takes a casual look at Serious games (link).

And Duncan Munro of Ghosts in the Game takes a serious look at Casual games (link).

I’d also like to point out that if you’re interested in casual games that go beyond the usual Bejeweled clone, you should be reading Jay is Games (link) where you’ll find mention of gems such as Nimian Hunter, a casual game with a decidedly Ico and Shadows of the Colossus feel to it… only, you know, casual (link).

    [UPDATE]

Thomas of Mile Zero takes a stab at pinning down the concept of casual and finds more games than you’d think (link).

    Will you be next?

Happy birthday Roundtable! I remember you being born - not long after my own blog congealed out of the ether. A whole year… The roundtable is one of my favourite aspects of the blog cluster I’m “in” as it creates connections between people’s thoughts, which is always interesting. I’m proud to say I have participated in almost all of them, and look forward to continuing to do so in months to come.

      Congratulations!

      It is an honour :D

The quality of writing here is excellent, I’m pleased to be a part of it.

Huzzah, round tably birthday. I do have a post in the works, but what with all the people moving out of my house and so forth it’s unlikely to make the deadline. I’ll post it when it’s done, because it’s worth posting round table or no, and you can decide whether to accept it as a late entry. 8-)

For you, Greg? I think we can accept a late entry!
