    July ‘06 Round Table

    By Corvus | July 10, 2006

It’s time once again for the monthly Round Table! As always, details on submitting a post can be found in the official Round Table FAQ (link). I promised a more focused topic this month and the theme of non-social, non-political topics is also still in effect, so I thought I’d draw out a theme that has infused several Round Tables as people have referenced their favorite games to talk about death, friendship, and home.

Topic: It Was Great When It All Began. There was a moment. A moment of sudden clarity. A moment when you knew that games were to be a part of your life, for the rest of your life. A moment when you knew that this hobby, or career, or passion, or calling, or whatever role it plays for you, would factor in heavily enough that family, friends, and significant others would simply have to understand, get on board, or leave. It might have been a single game experience. It might have been a single moment from a game. It might have been your first, or second, or seventh. But there was a moment. Or was there?

The post deadline is 11:59 PM on Thursday the 20th of July, 2006. Have fun!

Heh heh, mine was when I played FFI with a fever high enough to cause hallucinations. The characters were talking to me!

I’m guessing the content this round will be typically lighter. I could drop mine in a sentence right here, its also from a FF game. That’ll be nice though, a broad and shallow RT instead of the usual deep and narrow.

Precisely, Patrick. A refreshing change of pace was what I had in mind.

I’m not sure I have one actually. It’s like trying to remember that moment beer came into my life … I think I was nine or so… uh … um…

[...] This month’s Round Table Discussion is a trip down memory lane — “A moment when you knew that games were to be a part of your life…” As soon as Corvus announced the topic I immediately knew what moment that would be for me. The moment is crystal clear. It happened one Saturday morning on my way to Boy Scouts. [...]

neener neener neeeener, really long coment!

i remember, i was 6, a new kid showed up to church one day, and i went over to his house (i dont really remember why, but i just did) then, i walk in his house, and see this strange rectangle thing, with another rectangle sticking out of the top, so i ask “whats that?” and he replies “it’s an N-64″ and i, still having no clue what it is, ask “whats that?” and he walks over, turns on the TV, filp a switch on the n64, and all of a sudden, the TV snaps from blue, into this little movie with sound, and what looked like moving comic book people, so i say “so it plays cartoons? why not use a VCR?” then he laughs, picks up this wierd pad with a stick and some buttons, and he says “yeah, but YOU ontroll the cartoons!” and starts a game of super smash bros, after that, i was hooked, i though it was the coolet thing ever! no longer did i whatch other people doing things in movies, or read about them in books, now i got to CONTROL what happend! i was totaly hooked, and from the moment i blew the crap out of jiggly puff with a fully charged samus arm cannon shot, i knew i’d be doing this untill i was to old to move my thumbs quickly enough
